When we launched our Departure Jeans in 2019, I was so excited for our first pair of travel jeans. Our goal was to produce a classic pair of denim in a high-performing fabric without looking like "travel pants". We ended up with a denim blend guys told us they lived in, both at home and all over the world.
But as we continued to gather feedback, we identified a few small improvements. Now we're excited to introduce the Departure Jeans 3.0 — the same great pair of performance denim you love, with a few upgrades to deliver the best of both worlds.

The Departure 3.0 uses the same high-performance denim as the Departure Jeans 1.0 and 2.0.
To make a pair of jeans we'd want to live in everyday, we had to engineer a textile that felt like we were wearing the softest old-school denim, and then build in the wicking and stretch from our favorite travel pants. When the Departure was released - despite all of the denim in the world - people would go out of their way to tell me how special ours are.
If you’re not familiar with this fabric, know that it’s soft and comfortable, yet durable enough so your jeans can go the distance and still look great. We can’t have it any other way.
Our premium fabric is a blend of cotton with just the right amount of stretch, so it can adapt to your movement without losing its shape. At 11 oz per yard (compared with a standard 14 oz denim weight), our lightweight jeans are packable and comfortable, without sacrificing the durable cotton feel.
On long travel days or a warm afternoon exploring the city, I hate feeling hot and uncomfortable. So we made these jeans both breathable and moisture wicking, thanks to COOLMAX polyester. Problem solved.

Our approach is to innovate on a known style to create our not-so-basic basics. Strategic pocket placement is a huge part of what we like to call the Bluffworks Benefits.
We started with the traditional five jeans pockets — two traditional scoop pockets in front, one coin pocket, and two patch pockets on the back.
But there’s so much more to it than that. The Departure Jeans 3.0 have a total of 8 travel-friendly pockets for easy everyday carry and secure storage. So where are the other three?
On the back, we kept our signature phone pocket on the back right waistband. We added this to the 2.0 after we heard your requests for this pocket to match our other best selling travel pants and shorts, so you can store your phone in the same spot on every pair of Bluffworks pants.
The last two are great hidden pockets for travel – the first is a zippered pocket in the back yoke (which is the stitching under the waistband), and the second is a concealed side seam pocket on the right thigh.
Meet the Details
While we love to innovate on classics, we also want to make sure we’ll like the way a product will look for years to come. So we kept the metal rivets, dual stitching, and paper label of traditional denim so our jeans look and feel like an old favorite.
We remembered our guys love more belt loops, so we kept 7 loops on all sizes.
With the 3.0, we’re releasing them in a traditional Medium Blue Wash with contrasting yellow stitching.
Ways to Wear Them
A pair of performance denim that is easy to pack and can be worn for multiple days is worth a spot in your capsule wardrobe, as they pair well with everything else in your closet from Bluffworks.
At a glance, the Medium Blue Wash is a true blue jean. It’s easy to dress up or down. Our twist was to add a subtle color variation that would provide visual depth for a not-so-basic pair of denim blues. As you break them in, they’ll fade to become truly yours - as the best denim should.
These aren’t your average jeans. The Departure Jeans 3.0 are the give-it-all-you-got jeans that perform well, feel great, and always look amazing. I am really proud of this upgrade, and I hope you’ll love the new version.
